You are designing a ski jump ramp for the next Winter Olympics. You need to calculate the vertical height (h) from the starting

gate to the bottom of the ramp. The skiers push off hard with their ski poles at the start, just above the starting gate, so they typically have a speed of 2.0 m/s as they reach the gate. For safety, the skiers should have a speed of no more than 30.0 m/s when they reach the bottom of the ramp. You determine that for a 85.0 kg skier with good form, friction and air resistance will do total work of magnitude 4000 J on him during his run down the slope.What is the maximum height (h) for which the maximum safe speed will not be exceeded?

Answer:

h = 50.49 m

Explanation:

Data provided:

Speed of skier, u = 2.0 m/s

Maximum safe speed of the skier, v = 30.0 m/s

Mass of the skier, m = 85.0

Total work = 4000 J

Height from the starting gate = h

Now, from the law of conservation of energy

Total energy at the gate = total energy at the time maximum speed is reached

\frac{1}{2}mu^2+mgh=4000J+\frac{1}{2}mv^2

where, g is the acceleration due to the gravity

on substituting the values, we get

\frac{1}{2}\times85\times2.0^2+85\times9.81\times h=4000J+\frac{1}{2}\times85\times30^2

or

170 + 833.85 × h = 4000 + 38250

or

h = 50.49 m

Your friend, Tim, is playing with his sled. He ties a rope to his sled and attaches it to Lar's snowmobile. Tim has a mass of 71
kykrilka [37]

The maximum speed of Tim is 16.95 m/s.

The given parameters:

  • Mass of the rope, m = 71 kg
  • Tension on the rope, T = 220 N
  • Coefficient of kinetic friction, = 0.1
  • Time of motion, t = 8 s

<h3>What is Newton's second law of motion?</h3>
  • Newton's second law of motion states that, the force applied to an object is directly proportional to the product of mass and acceleration of the object.

The net force on Tim is calculated by applying Newton's second law of motion as follows;

T - \mu _k F_n = ma\\\\T - \mu _k F_n = m\frac{v}{t} \\\\T - \mu_k mg = m\frac{v}{t} \\\\t(\frac{T - \mu_k mg}{m} )= v\\\\8 (\frac{220 \ -\  0.1 \times 71 \times 9.8}{71} ) =v \\\\ 16.95 \ m/s = v

Thus, the maximum speed of Tim is 16.95 m/s.

the pilot of a new stealth helicopter, which has a mass of 15000 kg and was traveling at 180 m/s, accelerated to 250 m/s in 6 s
nirvana33 [79]

Answer:

Force = 175000 newtons

Final momentum = 1050000 N*S

Explanation:

We know that force is equal to Mass * acceleration

We also know that the mass of object is 15,000kg.

We know acceleration is (change in velocity)/time

Our initial velocity is 180m/s

our final velocity is 250 m/s

the time it took was 6 seconds

our change in velocity is 250 - 180 = 70

the time it took was 6 seconds

a = 70/6 = 11.67 m/s^2

So we can calculate force, by doing Mass * Acceleration, which is 15,000 * 11.67

Force is 175000 Newton's

Momentum is calculated by Velocity * mass or Force * time

we could do either one

<u>velocity</u><u> </u><u>*</u><u> </u><u>mass </u>way

we are given final velocity is 250 m/s, and that the initial velocity is 180 m/s. We first have to find the change in velocity by subtracting final and initial and get 70, and then we multiply that by the mass, which is 15000 kg.

we multiply them together and get 1050000 Kg*m/s

<u>Force </u><u>*</u><u> </u><u>time </u>way

We just calculated the force above, and got 175050 newton's. from that we just multiply by the time, which is 6 seconds

and we get a result of

1050000 Newton*seconds

*** remember newton*seconds is the same as kg*m/s
