Relaxin

Relaxin, secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary as well as the placenta, is responsible for helping to inhibit uterine activity and to soften the cervix and the collagen in joints. Softening of the cervix allows for dilatation at birth; softening of collagen allows for laxness in the lower spine and so helps enlarge the birth canal. The effect of estrogen is to cause breast and uterine enlargement. Progesterone has a major role in maintaining the endometrium, inhibiting uterine contractility, and aiding in the development of the breasts for lactation. Human placental lactogen (hPL), also known as human chorionic somatomammotropin, serves as an antagonist to insulin, making insulin less effective, thereby allowing more glucose to become available for fetal growth.

Do biological systems contradict the second law of thermodynamics? by taking energy from their surroundings and synthesizing lar
Bogdan [553]
Biological systems do not contradict the second law of thermodynamics. Even in this case, entropy is still always increasing. Biological systems can only decrease their own entropy by using copious amounts of energy and by increasing entropy in their surrounding environment. Also, unfavorable anabolism reactions are always paired with more favorable reactions, such as the use of ATP in order to make the overall Gibb's free energy of the reaction negative.

Which statement is best supported by the data in the graph? A graph entitled Number of people living with H I V, number of peopl
galben [10]

The graph is not given in the question and options are also not clear, so the required graph is attached below and the clear options are also given below:

Which statement is best supported by the data in the graph? A graph entitled Number of people living with H I V, number of people newly infected with H I V and number of AIDS deaths worldwide from 1990 to 2008 in millions is shown. Year is on the horizontal axis and number of people is on the vertical axis. The number of people living with H I V steadily increases over the years. The number of people newly infected increased from 1990 to 1996 and then began to decrease. The number of deaths due to AIDS increased from 1990 to 2002, and then began to level off and decrease.

A. Since 2000, there has been an increase in the number of people living with HIV, but a decrease in the number of people newly infected with HIV.

B. Since 1990, both the number of new HIV infections and the number of deaths due to AIDS has consistently increased

C. The life span of a person living with HIV has become shorter.

D. Twice as many people were living with HIV in 2008 than in 2000.

Answer:

A. Since 2000, there has been an increase in the number of people living with HIV, but a decrease in the number of people newly infected with HIV.

Explanation:

According to the data shown in the graph, since 2000, the people living with HIV has been increased, but a decrease in the number of people newly infected with HIV.

The reason behind this can be early screening of the infection since 2000 and awareness among people decreasing the infection rate as well.

Hence, the correct option is A.

Select the best description of amino acid metabolism: Group of answer choices Amino acid metabolism does not occur. Aerobic meta
Stolb23 [73]

Answer:

Aerobic metabolism of amino acid requires deamination

Explanation:

Living system can be defined as the internal systems of organisms and how materials circulate within organisms.

Generally, these living systems are self-organized life forms and are known to be very much interactive with their surroundings or environment. Also, living systems are dependent on the flow of information, matter and energy at various levels.

Some examples of living systems in organisms are respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system, and circulatory system.

Additionally, living systems comprises of the following components; cells, organs, muscle, tissues, blood, etc., which are typically used for carrying out various bodily functions such as respiration, digestion, metabolism, etc.

Metabolism can be defined as a set of chemical processes carried out by a living organism such as humans, plants and animals, in order to sustain life.

Aerobic (oxygen-using) metabolism can be defined as a biological process that typically involves the extraction of energy from any carbohydrate source such as amino acids, fatty acids, etc.

Basically, an aerobic metabolism of amino acid is a process that requires deamination.

Generally, proteins comprises of amino acids and it is responsible for maintaining the proper functioning of the body system.

Transamination can be defined as a biochemical process which typically involves the removal of amino groups from amino acids and transferring them to a ketoacid (amino acid without an amine group), so as to form new amino acids.

Basically, transamination is a reversible oxidation-reduction reaction that is responsible for the deamination of amino acids.
