I know a general practitioner in the UK. (a  medical doctor that is not a specialist, but can be seen as a first contact doctor).

I asked her what happens to veins after an injury - if they can't be properly stitched together. She answered that while those vessels would eventually dissappear, the vessels next to them would grow bigger and compensate by providing more blood to the region.
