Bubonic plague is caused by a bacillus form of bacterium called Yersina pestis. The bacterium found mainly in rodents and their fleas. This bacteria transmitted through the bite of infected fleas and rodents.

In various parts of the world this plague bacterium still exists as reported in 2003 in Africa killing 180 people. The last reported serious outbreak of this plague was in 2006 in Congo, when at least 50 people died. In recent years, the United States, China, India, Vietnam, and Mongolia have confirmed human plague cases.

Good sanitation, rodents and pest control can help in preventing plague outbreaks. Administering of correct antibiotics to the patients can control deaths.
