In the diagram, AB:BC is 3:4 and AC:42 Find BC
Afina-wow [57]
From the diagram:
AB + BC = AC
we know that AC = 42, therefore:
AB + BC = 42 ..............> equation I

We know that the ratio AB:BC is 3:4. This means that:
AB/BC = 3/4
4AB = 3BC
AB = (3/4) BC ...............> equation II

Substitute by equation II in equation I to get BC as follows:
(3/4) BC + BC = 42
1.75 BC = 42
BC = 24

Substitute with the value of BC in equation II to get AB as follows:
AB = (3/4) * 24 = 18

Andrew is planning a tailgate party before the big football game. He has budgeted a maximum of $60 for hamburgers and hot dogs.
Likurg_2 [28]
Since 60 dollars is the maximum, the cost (c) has to be equal to or less than 60. Writing that out, we get c≤60. We want to figure out the cost. Since hamburgers are 3$ per pound, if we buy x pounds of hamburgers we pay 3x dollars due to that we add 3 for every hamburger. Similarly, if the amount of hot dogs is y, we have 2y as the cost for the hot dogs. The cost is (cost of hamburgers)+(cost of hot dogs), so c=3x+2y and since c≤60, we plug 3x+2y in for c to get 3x+2y≤60
