This was a statement in my book:

A solution of a weak acid cannot be titrated with a weak base using an indicator to find the end-point because the pH change is too gradual close to the equivalence point.

Could someone please elaborate the bold text.

Check this link and search for the section "Titration curves for weak acid v weak base". Be sure to click on the "indicator" link in the section's note, too. Does that help? – Nicolau Saker Neto May 31 '14 at 13:30

if there is a weak base and a weak acid, there will be at least two pKs, complicating the titration curve. The full pH range may be unobtainable by adding a weak base. – DavePhD May 31 '14 at 13:45

An indicator works when the solution's pH is in its range. It's not necessarily the equivalence point. The point is called the end point where it actually changes color.

If the difference in volume is small between the equivalence and end points, then the indicator can be used. Since a gradual change implies more volume must be added to obtain the same pH change in other acid base titration, the difference between equivalence point and end point(if you use indicator) will be more and therefore indicator will not be suitable for it.

There are 48.72 g  Fluorine ions

<h3>Further explanation </h3>

Proust stated the Comparative Law that compounds are formed from elements with the same Mass Comparison so that the compound has a fixed composition of elements

In the same compound, although from different sources and formed by different processes, it will still have the same composition/comparison

%F in CaF₂ :

\tt \%F=\dfrac{2.Ar~F}{MW~CaF_2}\times 100\%\\\\\%F=\dfrac{2.19}{78}\times 100\5=48.72\%

mass of Fluorine :

\tt 48.72\%\times 200=97.44~g

So mass Fluorine ions(2 ions F in CaF₂⇒Ca²⁺+2F⁻) :

\tt =\dfrac{97.44}{2}=48.72~g

I'm afraid I won't pass. And very nervous. Can you help me please.
daser333 [38]
Just look at the number in front also called coefficient (you have to balance the equations first, but all the questions here are balanced, so no worries). for q1.
in the balanced equation, the number in front of aluminum oxide is 2 (2 - this number Al2O3) and for aluminium is 4 as in (4 Al). so the ratio is 2:4. simplified it is 1:2. or write it out fully
2 Al2O3: 4 Al
ignore everything after the number.
2:4
same as 1:2
Aluminium oxide to oxygen
2 Al2O3: 3 O2
2:3
aluminum to oxygen
4 Al: 3 O2
4:3

question 2
Mercury oxide to Mercury
2 HgO : 2 Hg
2:2
same as 1:1
Mercury oxide to oxygen
2 HgO : O2
since oxygen in this case does not have a number written in front of it, the default is 1.
2: 1.
you should be able to do the rest
