Compact bone tissue is the strongest bone tissue type due to certain structural features. It has few spaces and serves to impart protection, support, and resistance against the stress produced by weight and movement. The compact bone tissue makes most of the diaphyses of long bones.

Osteon makes the structural unit of compact bone tissue and consists of concentric rings of lamellae present around the central osteonic canal. All the osteons of compact bone tissue are arranged in the same direction and run parallel to the length of the diaphysis of long bones which in turn impart these long bones the resistance against bending and fracture.

The thickness of the compact bone tissues and the lines of the stress in the bones vary from bone to bone giving them the additional strength.
