A dockworker applies a constant horizontal force of 79.0 N to a block of ice on a smooth horizontal floor. The frictional force

is negligible. The block starts from rest and moves a distance 10.5 m in a time of 4.80 s .
(A) What is the mass of the block of ice?
(B) If the worker stops pushing at the end of 4.50 s, how far does the block move in the next 4.20s ?

Answer:

(a) mass of block ice=86.7 kg

(b) Distance=17.2179 m

Explanation:

Given data

For part (a)

First find  acceleration  then mass by ΣFx=ma

Let +x be the direction of force

ΣFx=79 N

x-x₀=10.5 m

t=4.80 s

Initial velocity V₀=0 m/s

x-x_{o}=v_{o}t+(1/2)at^{2}\\  10.5m=0+(0.5)a(4.80s)^{2}\\ 10.5m=11.52a\\a=10.5/11.52\\a=0.911m/s^{2}

Now ΣFx=ma

So

79N=m(0.911m/s^{2} )\\m=79/0.911\\m=86.7kg

For part (b)

First calculate the speed at the end period 4.50s of applied force

Then use the ending velocity as initial velocity in the second part of motion

After first 4.50 seconds

v=v_{o}+at\\ v=0+(0.911m/s^{2} )(4.50s)\\v=4.0995m/s\\

acceleration ax=0 m/s²

velocity v=constant

So

x-x_{o}=vt+(1/2)a_{x}t^{2}\\x-x_{o}=(4.0995m/s)(4.20s)+0\\x-x_{o}=17.2179m

An object originally at rest, is accelerated uniformly along a straight line to a speed of 8m/s in 2s. What is the acceleration
Anna11 [10]

Answer:

4m/s²

Explanation:

Initial velocity (u) = 0 m/s

Final velocity (v) = 8 m/s

Time taken (t) = 2 sec

Acceleration (a) = ?

We know

a  =  \frac{v - u}{t}  \\  =  \frac{8 - 0}{2} \\  =  \frac{8}{2}  \\  = 4 \: m |s ^{2}

Hope it will help :)

A tomato of mass 0.18 kg is dropped from a tall bridge. If the tomato has a speed of 11 m/s just before it hits the ground, what
kondor19780726 [428]
The kinetic energy of the tomato is :

K.E =  1/2 mv^2

K.E = 1/2 x 0.18 kg x 11 m/S^2

K.E = 0.99

Hope this helps

Sound will travel slowest through which medium?
SSSSS [86.1K]

The speed of sound depends on the medium in which it is transported.

Sound travels fastest through solids, slower through liquids and slowest through gases.

So it will travel slowest through water at 55 degrees

If a shuttle is orbiting a planet at a distance of 40 miles from the center of the planet, and is traveling at a rate of 500 mil
lawyer [7]

Answer:

Time taken, t = 30.15 minutes

Explanation:

It is given that,

Distance from the center of planet, r = 40 miles

Speed of the shuttle, v = 500 miles per hour

Let t is the time taken by it to complete  one full orbit. The displacement of the shuttle is,

d=2\pi r

d=2\pi \times 40

d = 251.32 miles

Now time can be calculated using the expression for the velocity as :

v=\dfrac{d}{t}

t=\dfrac{d}{v}

t=\dfrac{251.32\ miles}{500\ miles\ per\ hour}

t = 0.50264 hours

or

t = 30.15 minutes

So, the shuttle will take 30.15 minutes to complete one full orbit. Hence, this is the required solution.
