A private jet flies the same distance in 9 hours that a commercial jet flies in 8 hours. If the speed of the commercial jet was

175mph less than 2 times the speed of the private jet, find the speed of each jet.

Answer:

Private jet is 200 mph

Commercial jet is 225 mph

Explanation:

Let the speed of private jet be x mph therefore the speed of commercial jet will be 2x-175 mph

The distance is the same

Speed is distance per unit time hence distance is product of speed and time

Distance by private jet is 9x

Distance by commercial jet is 8(2x-175)

Since the distance is the same

9x=8(2x-175)

9x=16x-1400

7x=1400

X=200

Then 2x-175= 400-175=225

Speed of private jet is 200 mph while commercial jet is 225 mph

A catapult launches a test rocket vertically upward from a well, giving the rocket an initial speed of 80.6 m/s at ground level.
kow [346]

Before the engines fail, the rocket's altitude at time <em>t</em> is given by

y_1(t)=\left(80.6\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}\right)t+\dfrac12\left(3.90\dfrac{\rm m}{\mathrm s^2}\right)t^2

and its velocity is

v_1(t)=80.6\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}+\left(3.90\dfrac{\rm m}{\mathrm s^2}\right)t

The rocket then reaches an altitude of 1150 m at time <em>t</em> such that

1150\,\mathrm m=\left(80.6\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}\right)t+\dfrac12\left(3.90\dfrac{\rm m}{\mathrm s^2}\right)t^2

Solve for <em>t</em> to find this time to be

t=11.2\,\mathrm s

At this time, the rocket attains a velocity of

v_1(11.2\,\mathrm s)=124\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}

When it's in freefall, the rocket's altitude is given by

y_2(t)=1150\,\mathrm m+\left(124\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}\right)t-\dfrac g2t^2

where g=9.80\frac{\rm m}{\mathrm s^2} is the acceleration due to gravity, and its velocity is

v_2(t)=124\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}-gt

(a) After the first 11.2 s of flight, the rocket is in the air for as long as it takes for y_2(t) to reach 0:

1150\,\mathrm m+\left(124\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}\right)t-\dfrac g2t^2=0\implies t=32.6\,\mathrm s

So the rocket is in motion for a total of 11.2 s + 32.6 s = 43.4 s.

(b) Recall that

{v_f}^2-{v_i}^2=2a\Delta y

where v_f and v_i denote final and initial velocities, respecitively, a denotes acceleration, and \Delta y the difference in altitudes over some time interval. At its maximum height, the rocket has zero velocity. After the engines fail, the rocket will keep moving upward for a little while before it starts to fall to the ground, which means y_2 will contain the information we need to find the maximum height.

-\left(124\dfrac{\rm m}{\rm s}\right)^2=-2g(y_{\rm max}-1150\,\mathrm m)

Solve for y_{\rm max} and we find that the rocket reaches a maximum altitude of about 1930 m.

(c) In part (a), we found the time it takes for the rocket to hit the ground (relative to y_2(t)) to be about 32.6 s. Plug this into v_2(t) to find the velocity before it crashes:

v_2(32.6\,\mathrm s)=-196\frac{\rm m}{\rm s}

That is, the rocket has a velocity of 196 m/s in the downward direction as it hits the ground.

A bug walking on the circular rim of a flower
Mekhanik [1.2K]

Given parameters;

Time taken to complete a lap  = 8.667s

Radius of flower = 13.9cm

    convert to SI unit of m,  100cm = 1m

            13.9cm gives \frac{13.9}{100}   = 0.139m

Unknown  = speed

To solve this problem, we need to first find the circumference of the flower.

 Circumference of the circular flower  = 2 π r

    where r is the radius of the flower;

           Circumference  = 2 x 3.142 x 0.139 = 0.87m

Now to find the how fast the bug is travelling,

   Speed  = \frac{distance}{time}

Since the bug covered 1 lap, the distance is 0.87m

Now input the parameters and solve for speed;

    Speed  = \frac{0.87}{8.667}  = 0.1m/s

The bug is travelling at a speed of  0.1m/s

Calculate the potential energy stored in a metal ball of a mass of 80 kg kept at a height of 15m from the earth surface.What wil
True [87]

Answer:

39200 joules

the potential energy will be zero

Explanation:

we know that potential energy is found by multiplying mass, acceleration due to gravity and height from the Earth's surface

so it will be

potential energy= mgh

80x9.8x15

= 39200 joules

the potential energy of the mental ball will be zero when kept on the Earth's surface because the height from the Earth's surface will be zero and zero multiplied to any number is zero only

I have a doubt with the second one, this is what I think it is. Consult your teacher if you think my answer for the second one is wrong
