How does competition affect population size? Use the terms carrying capacity and limiting factor with your example.
svetoff [14.1K]

Limiting factors are resources or other factors in the environment that can lower the population growth rate. Competition for resources like food and space cause the growth rate to stop increasing, so the population levels off. This flat upper line on a growth curve is the carrying capacity.

a. What proportion of resistors have resistances less than 90 Ω? b. Find the mean resistance. c. Find the standard deviation of
Anettt [7]

Answer:

a) 0.0625 = 6.25%

b) 106.67 Ω

c) 9.43 Ω

d) 1

Explanation:

The probability distribution is given as

f(x) = (x - 80)/800 for 80 < x < 120

f(x) = 0 otherwise.

f(x) = (x/800) - (0.1)

a) Proportion of resistors with resistance less than 90 Ω

P(X < 90) = ∫⁹⁰₈₀ f(x) dx

∫⁹⁰₈₀ f(x) dx = ∫⁹⁰₈₀ [(x/800) - (0.1)]

= [(x²/1600) - 0.1x]⁹⁰₈₀

= [(90²/1600) - 0.1(90)] - [(80²/1600) - 0.1(80)]

= (5.0625 - 9) - [4 - 8]

= -3.9375 + 4 = 0.0625 = 6.25%

b) The mean is given by the expected value expression E(X) = = Σ xᵢpᵢ (with the sum done all over the data set for each variable and its corresponding probability)

It can be written in integral form as

Mean = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ xf(x) dx (with the integral done all over the probability function, i.e. from, 80 to 120)

Mean = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ x[(x/800) - (0.1)] dx

= ∫¹²⁰₈₀ [(x²/800) - (0.1x)] dx

= [(x³/2400) - (0.05x²)]¹²⁰₈₀

= [(120³/2400) - (0.05(120²)] - [(80³/2400) - (0.05(80²)]

= [720 - 720] - [213.33 - 320] = 106.67 Ω

c) Standard deviation = √(variance)

Variance = Var(X) = Σx²p − μ²

μ = mean = expected value = 106.67 Ω

Σx²p = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ x²f(x) dx = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ x² [(x/800) - (0.1)] dx = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ [(x³/800) - (0.1x²)] dx

= [(x⁴/3200) - (0.0333x³)]¹²⁰₈₀

= [(120⁴/3200) - (0.0333(120³)] - [(80⁴/3200) - (0.0333(80)³)]

= (64800 - 57600) - (12800 - 17066.667)

= 11466.667

Variance = 11466.667 - 106.67² = 88.85

Standard deviation = √88.85 = 9.43 Ω

d) Cdf = sum of probabilities over the entire probability function

Cdf = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ f(x) dx = ∫¹²⁰₈₀ [(x/800) - (0.1)] dx

= [(x²/1600) - 0.1x]¹²⁰₈₀ = [(120²/1600) - 0.1(120)] - [(80²/1600) - 0.1(80)] = (9 - 12) - (4 - 8) = -3+4 = 1 as it should be!!!

Hope this Helps!!!

The alternative to nuclear fission reactors in a nuclear fusion reactor. Explain why it is much more difficult to get a fusion r
Sliva [168]

Answer: The major challenges are as

1) understanding of the plasma: Plasma is a soup like mixture of subatomic particles of different atoms nuclei and electrons that are shattered apart by the temperature at which plasma is formed. further research is needed to understand the behavior of plasma so that it can be put to a proper use.

2) Confinement of plasma: Once we get the plasma we need to hold it so that we can obtain heat from it to drive a steam turbine but the sheer temperature of plasma is in millions of Celsius thus currently making it impossible to confine conventionally. Scientists use a loop of electric and magnetic fields to keep it in circulatory like manner so that it can be studied.

3) finally to obtain electricity from the plasma it should be stable to produce electricity. But currently to obtain pressure, temperature so that we have a sustained supply is highly difficult in technical and economical aspects.

Inertial confinement: In order to get the nuclei of atoms close enough for fusion this type of method used compression of the nuclei into highly small volumes.This is accomplished by use of lasers which are directed towards the fuel pellets that implode and travel towards other nuclei making fusion possible. It's main advantage is that it requires lesser time to initiate fusion but the disadvantage being that a large power is used to fire the lasers and the lasers should all hit the small target.

Magnetic Confinement: In this method we use a magnetic and electric fields in a properly designed space to keep the plasma in motion. In motion the nuclei of the atoms come close enough to initiate fusion.It's advantage being less power is required to start the process as compared to inertial confinement and the disadvantage being that plasma confinement is currently not properly understood.

An object begins x=75.2 m and undergoes a displacement of -48.7 m. what is its final position?
xz_007 [3.2K]

Answer:

26.5 m

Explanation:

x_{o} = initial position of the object = 75.2 m

x  = final position of the object

d  = displacement of the object = - 48.7

Displacement of the object is given as the difference of final and initial position of the object

d = x - x_{o}

Inserting the values

- 48.7 = x - 75.2

x = 26.5 m
