The four steps of the menstrual cycle are as follows:  

1. Menstruation: It is the eradication of the endometrium, that is, the thickened lining of the uterus from the body via the vagina. The menstrual fluid comprises cells from the lining of the uterus, blood, and mucus.  

2. Follicular phase: The follicular phase begins on the menstruation's first day and terminates with evolution. It is mediated by the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, which discharges FSH.  

3. Ovulation: It is the release of a developed egg from the ovary surface. This generally takes place mid-cycle, around two weeks or so prior to the beginning of menstruation.  

4. Luteal phase: At the time of ovulation, the egg erupts from its follicle, however, the ruptured follicle remains on the ovary surface. In the next two weeks, the follicle gets convert into a composition called corpus luteum.
