A whole number is an integer, and a mixed number is a whole number and a fraction.

Now, let's make the problem.

"Mike has 3 pies and half of one (here we have the mixed number 3 (1/2), If he sells each pie for $4. How much money did he can win?"

this is the number of pies that he has times 4 dollars:

M = (3 + (1/2))*$4 = 3*$4 + (1/2)*$4 = $12 + $2 = $14
