Phytosterols can be naturally found in plants' cell membrane. And it was discovered that they possess similar structure with that of the body's cholesterol. So, this make them to be competing with body's cholesterol for digestive system or intestinal tract absorption when ingested.

It is known that phytosterol brings about reduction of cholesterol through its action, thus, a decrease risk in coronary heart disease.

LDL means low - density lipoprotein. Lipoprotein is the combination of fats and proteins. When the level of LDL rise, it can result to increase risk of heart disease.

In this case, phytosterol will reduce the absorption of LDL by competing with it, thereby reducing any risk of increase in heart disease.

This makes phytosterol a beneficial dietary supplement for people with high LDL level.
