A piston-cylinder device with a set of stops initially contains 0.6 kg of steam at 1.0 MPa and 400 C. The location of the stops

corresponds to 40 percent of the initial volume. Now the steam is cooled. Determine the compression work if the final state is (a) 1.0 MPa and 250 C and (b) 500 kPa. (c) Also determine the temperature at the final state in part (b).

Answer:

a) 44.316 KJ

b) 110.3696 KJ

c) 151.83°C

Explanation:

Givens:

Substance: H20, m = 0.6 kg P1 = 1 MPa, T1 = 400°C   v2 = 0.4 v1

First We Compute v1 as Following:

P1= 1 MPa, T1= 400°C

From TABLE we compare T(sat). corresponding to P1 with T1 determine the state phase

T(sat) = 179.88°C < T1

The state phase is Superheated

From TABLE we get v1 corresponding to P1 and T1

v1 = 0.30661 m^3/kg

(a) P2 = 1 MPa, T2 = 250°C

From TABLE we compare T(sat) corresponding to P2 with T2 determine the state phase

T(sat) = 179.88°C < T2

The state phase is Superheated

From we get v2 corresponding to P2 and T2

v1 = 0.23275 m^3/kg

P1 = P2 =1 MPa

The process is isobaric

W 1_2 = mP(v2 — v1) = 0.6 x 1000(0.23275 - 0.30661) = - 44.316 KJ

The compression work Wb = 44.316 KJ

(b) P2 = 500 kPa.

the piston reaches the stops so there are two processes

Process 1_2 is isobaric

W 1 _2 = MP(v2 —V1) = 0.6 x 1000(0.4 x 0.30661-0.30660) = -110.3796 KJ

Process 1_2 is isochoric

W2_3 = zero

The compression work Wb = W 1_2 + W 2_3 = 110.3796+ 0 = 110.3696 KJ

(c) v2 = 0.4v1 = 0.9 x 0.30661 = 0.122649 m^3/kg.

    P2 = 500 kPa

From TABLE we compare vf and vg corresponding to P2 with v2 to determine the state phase

vf = 0.001093 m^3/kg < v2 < vg = 0.37483 m^3/kg

The state phase is Saturated Mixture

T2 = Tsat = 151.83°C

Suppose that the weights for newborn kittens are normally distributed with a mean of 125 grams and a standard deviation of 15 gr
kherson [118]

(a) If a kitten weighs 99 grams at birth, it is at 5.72 percentile of the weight distribution.

(b) For a kitten to be at 90th percentile, the minimum weight is 146.45 g.

Weight distribution of the kitten

In a normal distribution curve;

  • 2 standard deviation (2d) below the mean (M), (M - 2d) is at 2%
  • 1 standard deviation (d) below the mean (M), (M - d) is at 16 %
  • 1 standard deviation (d) above the mean (M), (M + d) is at 84%
  • 2 standard deviation (2d) above the mean (M), (M + 2d) is at 98%

M - 2d = 125 g - 2(15g) = 95 g

M - d = 125 g - 15 g = 110 g

95 g is at 2% and 110 g is at 16%

(16% - 2%) = 14%

(110 - 95) = 15 g

14% / 15g = 0.93%/g

From 95 g to 99 g:

99 g - 95 g  = 4 g

4g x 0.93%/g = 3.72%

99 g will be at:

(2% + 3.72%) = 5.72%

Thus, if a kitten weighs 99 grams at birth, it is at 5.72 percentile of the weight distribution.

Weight of the kitten in the 90th percentile

M + d = 125 + 15 = 140 g      (at 84%)

M + 2d = 125 + 2(15) = 155 g   ( at 98%)

155 g - 140 g = 15 g

14% / 15g = 0.93%/g

84% + x(0.93%/g) = 90%

84 + 0.93x = 90

0.93x = 6

x = 6.45 g

weight of a kitten in 90th percentile = 140 g + 6.45 g  = 146.45 g

Thus, for a kitten to be at 90th percentile, the approximate weight is 146.45 g

Answer:

Geological engineers can help determine if the soil and structural stability in the building's location are satisfactory.

Explanation:

Geologic Engineering refers to a job which applies geology to engineering. This type of job focuses on the investigation of sites in response to soil, rock and groundwater. They help design the major structures for engineering works, thus, it is also their role to know whether the building's soil and structural stability are satisfactory. They determine how much of the structure is a safe load for the soil it is standing upon. They also test the strength of both rock and soil at different depths. This will help them know whether the location will be suitable for the skyscraper.
