Answer is: mass of unused sulfur is 5.87 grams.

Balanced chemical reaction: C + 2S → CS₂.

m(C) = 12.0 g; mass of carbon.

m(S) = 70.0 g; mass of sulfur.

n(C) = m(C) ÷ M(C).

n(C) = 12 g ÷ 12 g/mol.

n(C) = 1 mol; amount of substance.

n(S) = m(S) ÷ M(S).

n(S) = 70 g ÷ 32.065 g/mol.

n(S) = 2.183 mol.

From chemical reaction: n(C) : n₁(S) = 1 : 2.

n₁(S) = 1 mol · 2 = 2 mol.

Δn(S) = n(S) - n₁(S).

Δn(S) = 2.183 mol - 2 mol.

Δn(S) = 0.183 mol; amount of unused sulfur.

Δm(S) = 0.183 mol · 32.065 g/mol.

Δm(S) = 5.87 g.

Define shielding and effective nuclear charge. What is the connection between the two?
ivolga24 [154]

Answer:

The relation between the shielding and effective nuclear charge is given as

Z_{eff} = Z -S

where s denote shielding

z_{eff} denote effective nuclear charge

Z - atomic number

Explanation:

shielding is referred to as the repulsion of an outermost electron to the pull of electron from valence shell.  Higher the electron in valence shell higher will be the shielding effects.

Effective nuclear charge is the amount of net positive charge that valence electron has.

The relation between the shielding and the effective nuclear charge is given as

Z_{eff} = Z -S

wheres denote shielding

z_{eff} denote effective nuclear charge

Z - atomic number

Calculate the grams of sodium hydroxide formed when 2.24 moles of sodium oxide react with water
Romashka [77]
The balanced reaction is
Na2O + H2O --> 2NaOH

If 2.24 moles of sodium oxide react, that means 4.48 moles of NaOH is formed as it is a 1 to 2 stoichiometric relationship.

Now we multiply by the molar mass to get grams.

4.48 moles NaOH * (39.997 grams/1 mole) = 179.2 grams

Your answer is 179. grams.
