The green and red tags are primary channels if the green band is on top that means the channel is to the right or starboard if the red is on top then the primary channel is to the left or port side.

The red color of the buoy indicates that the channel is on the port side or is towards left while the green color of the buoy indicates that the channel is to the starboard or towards the right.

Further explanation:

Buoys are essential for guiding the mariners at sea as the traffic signals are used to guide the drivers on the road. If different kinds of buoyage systems were used around the word then it would be the leading cause of accidents or confusion.

(IALA) INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MARINE AIDS TO NAVIGATION AND LIGHTHOUSE AUTHORITIES :

It has made efforts to establish the same rules with the aim of improving navigational safety. IALA proposed a system which allows the use of lateral marks in each region. They have made two regions named as the region A or region B.

Region A:

In region A which includes Europe, New Zealand, Africa and some Asian countries, the red color in the lateral system is used to mark the port side of the channels, while the green color is used for the starboard side.

Region B:

While in region B the colors are reversed. This region includes America, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.

Marks provided by IALA buoyage system:

The IALA buoyage system provides us with six kinds of marks.

  1. Emergency wreck making the buoy
  2. Special marks
  3. Lateral marks
  4. Isolated danger marks
  5. Cardinal marks
  6. Safe watermarks
