Total was x
subtract 36.25 amount of money and you have -14.75 left

You can write this
x - 36.25 = -14.75
add 36.25 to both sides
x = -14.75 + 36.25
Solve by combining like terms
x = 21.5

You had $21.5 on your account before you withdrew $36.25 and had a balance of -$14.75 left.

Hope this helps!
