The US constitution considers it a proper and much needed manner to have indirect election.

Indirect election refers to the manner of election in which people do not vote for their president or vice president, but rather they elect the people who shall further vote to select the president.

Inn this manner the voting is done in stages, Stage 1 results of voting chooses the people who will be responsible of choosing the president directly.

Stage 2 elected people vote for the desired candidate of president.

Further, electoral college means the combination of all the electors, as represented and chosen by the each state. There are total of 538 electors and there has to be 270 electors voting for the same person to be the president in order to elect such president by absolute majority.
