An optical fiber consists of an outer "cladding" layer and an inner core with a slightly higher index of refraction. Light rays

entering the core are trapped inside by total internal reflection and forced to travel along the fiber (see the following figure). Suppose the cladding has an index of refraction of 1.46 and the core has an index of refraction of 1.48.Calculate the largest angle between a light ray and the longitudinal axis of the fiber for which the ray will be totally internally reflected at the core/cladding boundary.

Answer

given,

refractive index of cladding = 1.46

refractive index of inner core = 1.48

largest angle between light ray = ?

critical angle,

\theta_c = sin^{-1}(\dfrac{1.46}{1.48})

\theta_c =80.6^0

\theta_c =90^0 - 80.6^0= 9.4^0

According to Snell's law

    n_1 sin\theta_i= n_2 sin \theta_r

    sin\theta_i = 1.48\times sin 9.4^0

    \theta_i = sin^{-1}{0.242}

    \theta_i =14^0

assuming angle of incident be equal to 50°

then Largest angle

        =50° - 14° = 36°

If you travel 40 miles east and then turn around and drive 12 miles west, the displacement is?
AVprozaik [17]
To find how far east we drove (This is the displacement), we simple subtract 12 from 40.
An easy way to do this in your head is to round 12 down to 10, subtract 10 from 40, then subtract the remaining 2. This should result in an answer showing that you drove 28 miles east.

If 12V is applied to a circuit containing a single 10kΩ 1/4W resistor, will it be safe to operate the circuit?
Nata [24]

Yes, it is safe to operate the circuit, before the power dissipated is less than the maximum power

Explanation:

For a resistor, the power rating gives the maximum power at which the resistor is safe to operate.

For the resistor in this problem, this maximum power is given and it is

P_{max}=\frac{1}{4}W=0.25 W

The power dissipated on a resistor can be calculated with the equation

P=\frac{V^2}{R}

where

V is the potential difference applied on the resistor

R is the resistance

In this problem, we have:

V=12 V\\R=10 k\Omega = 10,000 \Omega

therefore, the power dissipated on the resistor is:

P=\frac{12^2}{10,000}=0.014 W

Which is less than the maximum power: therefore, yes, it will be safe to operate the circuit.
