(a) 5310.7 V/m

The magnitude of the electric field between two parallel plates is given by

E=\frac{\sigma}{\epsilon_0}

where

\sigma is the surface charge density

\epsilon_0 is the vacuum permittivity

In this problem,

\sigma = 47.0 nC/m^2 = 47.0 \cdot 10^{-9} C/m^2

So the electric field here is

E=\frac{47.0\cdot 10^{-9} C/m^2}{8.85\cdot 10^{-12}F/m}=5310.7 V/m

(b) 116.8 V

The potential difference between the two plates is given by

V= Ed

where

E is the magnitude of the electric field

d is the separation between the plates

Here we have

E = 5310.7 V/m

d = 2.20 cm = 0.022 m

So the potential difference is

V=(5310.7 V/m)(0.022m)=116.8 V

(c) The electric field does not change

Explanation:

As stated in part (a), the magnitude of the electric field is given by

E=\frac{\sigma}{\epsilon_0}

where

\sigma is the surface charge density

\epsilon_0 is the vacuum permittivity

as we can see, the value of E depends only on the surface charge density, which is kept constant in this case, so the value of the electric field strength does not change.

(d) The potential difference doubles (233.6 V)

In this situation, the separation between the plates is doubled, so:

d' = 2 d

The potential difference depends linearly on the separation between the plates:

V = Ed

where

E is the magnitude of the electric field (which is kept constant)

d is the separation between the plates

So the new potential difference will be

V' = E(2d) = 2 (Ed) = 2 V

which means that the potential difference will double:

V'=2 (116.8 V)=233.6 V

Answer:

when the ground is very hot and the air is cool.

Explanation:

The hot earth warms a layer of air right above the ground. Light is refracted as it passes through the cool air and onto the hot air sheet (bent). A coating of very warm air near the earth bends the light from the sky almost into a U-shaped bend.

A sled starts from rest,
Marrrta [24]

Answer:

25.6 m/s

Explanation:

Draw a free body diagram of the sled.  There are two forces acting on the sled:

Normal force pushing perpendicular to the hill

Weight force pulling straight down

Take sum of the forces parallel to the hill:

∑F = ma

mg sin θ = ma

a = g sin θ

a = (9.8 m/s²) (sin 38.0°)

a = 6.03 m/s²

Given:

v₀ = 0 m/s

a = 6.03 m/s²

t = 4.24 s

Find: v

v = at + v₀

v = (6.03 m/s²) (4.24 s) + (0 m/s)

v = 25.6 m/s

The maximum wavelength an electromagnetic wave can have and still eject an electron from a copper surface is 264 nm .What is the
Tamiku [17]

Answer:

4.71 eV

Explanation:

For an electromagnetic wave with wavelength

\lambda=264 nm = 2.64\cdot 10^{-7} m

the energy of the photons in the wave is given by

E=\frac{hc}{\lambda}=\frac{(6.63\cdot 10^{-34}Js)(3\cdot 10^8 m/s)}{2.64\cdot 10^{-7}m}=7.53\cdot 10^{-19} J

where h is the Planck constant and c the speed of light. Therefore, this is the minimum energy that a photon should have in order to extract a photoelectron from the copper surface.

The work function of a metal is the minimum energy required by the incident light in order to extract photoelectrons from the metal's surface. Therefore, the work function corresponds to the energy we found previously. By converting it into electronvolts, we find:

E=\frac{7.53\cdot 10^{-19} J}{1.6\cdot 10^{-19} J/eV}=4.71 eV

sleet_krkn [62]

To solve the two parts of this problem, we will begin by considering the expressions given for gravitational potential energy and finally kinetic energy (to find velocity). From the potential energy we will obtain its derivative that is equivalent to the Force of gravitational attraction. We will start considering that all the points on the ring are same distance:

r = \sqrt{x^2+R^2}

Then the potential energy is

U = \frac{-GMm}{\sqrt{x^2+R^2}}

PART A) The force is excepted to be along x-axis.

Therefore we take a derivative of U with respect to x.

F = -\frac{dU}{dx}

F = -\frac{d}{dx}(GMm(\frac{1}{R}-\frac{1}{\sqrt{x^2+R^2}}))

F = \frac{GMmx}{(x^2+R^2)^{3/2}}

This expression is the resultant magnitude of the Force F.

PART B) The magnitude of loss in potential energy as the particle falls to the center

U = GMm(\frac{1}{R}-\frac{1}{\sqrt{x^2+R^2}})

According to conservation of energy,

\frac{1}{2}mv^2 = GMm (\frac{1}{R}-\frac{1}{\sqrt{x^2+R^2}})

\therefore v = \sqrt{2GM(\frac{1}{R}-\frac{1}{x^2+R^2})}
