Thepotemich [5.8K]

The two copies of each type of chromosome found in normal somatic (body) cells in an organism, throughout the cell cycle, are called Sister Chromatids.

Sister Chromatids are the identical copies that are formed by the replication of DNA. The two Sister Chromatids are held together by a Centromere.

Human somatic cells are diploid meaning they have two copies of each chromosome. Human diploid cell contains 46 chromosome in which there is one pair of sex chromosome and 22 pairs of autosomes.

Sister Chromatids separate during Anaphase of Mitosis.

If the centromere is present then they are referred to as chromosome.

In Meiosis, Sister Chromatids gives a structure that are involved in the genetic information.

The location of centromere on sister chromatid determines the different kind of chromosomes namely:

  • Metacentric chromosome
  • Sub meta centric chromosome
  • Acrocentric chromosome
  • Telocentric chromosome
