Proposed in the year 1809, the Tallmadge Amendment was an amendment in response to a bill concerning the entry of the Territory of Missouri to the Union as a free state. On 12 February 1819, this amendment was presented to the House of Representatives by James Tallmadge, Jr.

However, in the year 1820 when the Missouri Compromise was enacted, this Tallmadge Amendment was not included in it. The Missouri Compromise attempted to satisfy both the sides of the debate by recognizing Missouri as a slave state in replacement for the entry of Maine as a free state. Therefore, it may be said that the political dis-balance between slave and free states was caused by the appeal of the territory of Missouri for entry to the Union as a slave state.

There are 605 tribes among the Native Americans and most of them work daily to bring to the nations non-Native Americans up to speed about the continuing conditions of Native American reservation regarding schools and daily health care.
