Many physical features, such as mountain ranges and valleys, have made migrating and settling difficult. Migrating west was very difficult for many pioneers because of the rough terrain and weather they encountered. The Atlantic Ocean to the right was a great asset because it led to trading with Europe and passage to the eastern hemisphere. Lakes and rivers, such as the Great Salt Lake and the Mississippi River, have been an asset as well in producing salt, fish, and transporting goods. History was shaped by how the climates and physical features were laid out.
