Angelica is working with function machines. She has the two machines shown at right. She wants to put them in order so that the

output of the first machine becomes the input of the second. She wants to use a beginning input of 6.
a. In what order must she put the machines to get a final output of 5?
b. Is it possible for her to find an input that will get a final output of -5? If so, show how she could do that. If not, explain why not.

<span>Given the two functions as y = \sqrt{x-5} and y = x^2 - 6.
We can rewrite the functions as f (x) = \sqrt{x-5} and g (x)=x^2 - 6

To arrange the functions such that <span>the output of the first machine becomes the input of the second, we have f ( g (x) ) or g ( f(x) )</span>
f ( g (x) )= \sqrt{x^2-6-5} = \sqrt{x^2-11}
and
g ( f (x) )=( \sqrt{x-5} )^2-6=x-5-6=x-11

Given an input of 6,
</span><span>f ( g (6) )=\sqrt{6^2-11} =\sqrt{36-11}=\sqrt{25}=5
and
g ( f (6) )=x-11=6-11=-5

Therefore, to get a final output of 5, she will put the function machine with the function </span>y=x^2-6 as the first machine and the function machine with the function y=\sqrt{x-5} as the second machine.

b. Using the same input of 6 also results in -5 as the square reoot of 25 is both 5 and -5.
Also, rearranging the maching such that the function machine with the function y=\sqrt{x-5} is the first machine and the function machine with the function y=x^2-6 is the second machine will also result in a final output of -5 with an input of 6.

6/12+6/12 and simplify it
erica [24]
Hey there, since we already have common denominators (the common denominators are 12) we are going to keep the denominator the same and add the numerators, 6+6=12. So, we have 12/12. And you asked to simplify it so 12/12=1. Therefore, 6/12+6/12=1. Hoped I helped. :)

Tan 12 degrees = 10/x
Ilia_Sergeevich [38]
Solve like an equation,
You need x by itself.
Since x is on the denominator, multiply both sides by x to clear the fraction.
Tan 12 = 10/x
x Tan12 = 10
Divide both sides by Tan12
x = 10/(Tan12)
x = 47

mixer [17]
Let's dissect    <span>f(x) = –x2 – 2x – 1.

a) This is a quadratic equation whose graph is a parabola that opens down.
b) The coefficients of x^2, x and 1 are {-1,-2, -1}.

</span>
c) Applying the quadratic formula results in

        -(-2) plus or minus sqrt ([-2]^2 - 4(-1)(-1) )
x = ----------------------------------------------------------
                            2(-1)

or x  = + 2 plus or minus sqrt(0)
           --------------------------------- = -1
                        -2

Actually, we have a double root here:  x is {-1, -1}.

This means that the graph of this parabola touches the x-axis once, at (-1,0), but does not cross that axis.  (-1,0) is also the "root" or "solution" or "x-intercept"

The function is increasing from -infinity up to -1, and decreasing from -1 to positive infinity.

The domain is "the set of all real numbers."

The range is "the set of all real numbers from neg. infinity to zero."  y is never positive.

Please graph this function, so that you can verify this information.
