A DC current of 60 mA can cause paralysis of the body's respiratory muscles and hence interfere with breathing, but only 15 mA (

rms) of AC current will do the same thing. Suppose a person is working with electrical power lines on a warm humid day and therefore has a low body resistance of 1100 OHMS. What DC and AC (amplitude and rms) potentials would it take to cause respiratory paralysis?

To solve this problem it is necessary to apply the concepts related to Ohm's Law to find the voltage in the case of direct current. While for the Alternate current we use the concept of RMS voltage.

PART A) In the case of DC we have to,

V=IR

Where,

I = Current

R = Resistance

Where the current is 60mA y the resistance is 1000\Omega , then the potential would be

V=(60mA)(1100\Omega)

V = 66V

In the case of DC we have that the current and the RMS voltage is,

I_{rms} = 15 mA

R = 1100 \Omega

V_{rms} = 16.5 V

The potential in AC then is,

V_o = \sqrt{2}V_{rms}

V_o = \sqrt{2}(16.5)

V_o = 23.3345 V

Advocard [28]

Answer:

a) F = 2250 Ib

b) F = 550 Ib

c) new max force ( F newmax ) = 2850 Ib

Explanation:

A) The force the wall of the elevator shaft exert on the motor if the elevator starts from rest and goes up

max capacity  of elevator = 24000 Ibs

counterweight = 1000 Ibs

To calculate the force (F) :

we first calculate the Tension using this relationship

Counterweight (1000) - T =  ( 1000 / g ) ( g/4 )

Hence T = 750 Ib

next determine F

750 + F - 2400 = 2400 / 4

hence F = 2250 Ib

B ) calculate Tension first

T - 1000 = ( 1000/g ) ( g/4)

T = 1250 Ib

F = 2400 -1250 - 2400/ 4

F = 550 Ib

C ) determine design limit

Max = 2400 * 1.2 = 2880 Ib

750 + new force - 2880 = 2880 / 4

new max force ( F newmax ) = 2850 Ib

yanalaym [24]

Answer:

5,000J

Explanation:

Work = Force x Distance

Distance back and forth is canceled out, so either the answer is + or -

5.0m + 5.0m = 10.0m

500N x 10.0m = 5,000J
