<em>Meristems or meristematic tissues consist of a group of actively dividing, undifferentiated cells. They posses the ability to enlarge, stretch and differentiate into other types of cells or organs as they mature.</em>

Meristems are of three types:

  • Apical meristems which consists of shoot apical meristems that give rise to organs like leaves and flowers and root apical meristems that give rise to roots.
  • Intercalary meristems which is specific to the stems of monocots and responsible for rapid stem elongation as well as leaf regrowth in some plant species.
  • Floral meristems which is the transformation of apical meristems in flowers and responsible for the development of flower structures like sepal, petals, etc.
