During the quaternary period, the temperature was very cold, making those mammals not adapted to the weather to suffer. However, those mammals that did adapt, such as the wooly mammoth and mastodons were subject to being preyed upon by large predators, such as saber toothed cats and cave bears.

Mating between same species with favored genes guarantees survival of the population in their chosen environment. As the environment changes, the mating behavior between species may again change resulting to a different gene pool to guarantee survival. </span>
