Answer: Antidiuretic hormone binds to receptors on cells in the collecting ducts of the kidney and promotes reabsorption of water back into the circulation. In the absense of antidiuretic hormone, the collecting ducts are virtually impermiable to water, and it flows out as urine.

Antidiuretic hormone stimulates water reabsorbtion by stimulating insertion of "water channels" or aquaporins into the membranes of kidney tubules. These channels transport solute-free water through tubular cells and back into blood, leading to a decrease in plasma osmolarity and an increase osmolarity of urine.

Effects on the Vascular System

In many species, high concentrations of antidiuretic hormone cause widespread constriction of arterioles, which leads to increased arterial pressure. It was for this effect that the name vasopressin was coined. In healthy humans, antidiuretic hormone has minimal pressor effects.

Control of Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion

The most important variable regulating antidiuretic hormone secretion is plasma osmolarity, or the concentration of solutes in blood. Osmolarity is sensed in the hypothalamus by neurons known as an osmoreceptors, and those neurons, in turn, stimulate secretion from the neurons that produce antidiuretic hormone.

When plasma osmolarity is below a certain threshold, the osmoreceptors are not activated and secretio of antidiuretic hormone is suppressed. When osmolarity increases above the threshold, the ever-alert osmoreceptors recognize this as their cue to stimulate the neurons that secrete antidiuretic hormone. As seen the the figure below, antidiuretic hormone concentrations rise steeply and linearly with increasing plasma osmolarity.

Osmotic control of antidiuretic hormone secretion makes perfect sense. Imagine walking across a desert: the sun is beating down and you begin to lose a considerable amount of body water through sweating. Loss of water results in concentration of blood solutes - plasma osmolarity increases. Should you increase urine production in such a situation? Clearly not. Rather, antidiuretic hormone is secreted, allowing almost all the water that would be lost in urine to be reabsorbed and conserved.

A marked decrease in brain processing and memory in some older adults is MOST likely caused by: A. inadequate control processes.
Andru [333]

Answer:

Option-B

Explanation:

The brain is an organ composed of neurons which controls all the voluntary and involuntary of animals. In humans, the brain is located in the skull where the brain is suspended in a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid.

As humans ages and becomes old aged, the neurons in the brain losing their ability to perform their function, if they are lost they cannot be regenerated.

The lesions appear on the white matter of the brain and the brain shrink. Due to these known and other unknown features, the process controlled by these neurons become inadequate and shows slower brain processing and weak memory.

Thus, Option-B is the correct answer.

Cellular respiration is the process that converts nutrients into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a storage molecule that provides
Genrish500 [490]

Answer:

Plants perform photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Explanation:

 • Cellular respiration is the conversion of glucose into ATP and energy yielding molecules such as NADH and FADH2 along with water and oxygen and carbon dioxide as by-products.
 • Cellular respiration is a process that occurs both in autotrophs and heterotrophs.
 • Only the final stage of cellular respiration i.e. oxidative phosphorylation or electron transport chain requires oxygen as the final electron acceptor.
 • Heterotrophic cells don't take in carbondioxide, they utilize glucose obtained through food.

Habitat destruction, and thus habitat fragmentation, is the major cause of declining biodiversity; the second major cause is ___
alekssr [168]

Habitat destruction, and thus habitat fragmentation, is the major cause of declining biodiversity; the second major cause is Invasive Species.

The process by which a natural ecosystem can no longer support its native species is known as habitat destruction. Reduced biodiversity and species abundance result from the displacement or death of the creatures that once occupied the area. The loss of biodiversity is mostly caused by habitat degradation.

An imported organism that overpopulates and damages its new habitat is referred to as an invasive species. Even though the majority of imported species are neutral or helpful to other species, invasive species have a negative impact on habitats and bioregions, harming their ecology, the environment, and/or their economy.

The most frequent methods for invasive plants, animals, microorganisms, and other species to spread to new ecosystems are thought to be human activities like those involved in international trade and the pet trade.
