What causes the jet stream to move farther south?

Chemistry

Jet streams are the major means of transport for weather systems. A jet stream is an area of strong winds ranging from 120-250 mph that can be thousands of miles long, a couple of hundred miles across and a few miles deep. Jet streams usually sit at the boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere at a level called the tropopause. This means most jet streams are about 6-9 miles off the ground. Figure A is a cross section of a jet stream.

The dynamics of jet streams are actually quite complicated, so this is a very simplified version of what creates jets. The basic idea that drives jet formation is this: a strong horizontal temperature contrast, like the one between the North Pole and the equator, causes a dramatic increase in horizontal wind speed with height. Therefore, a jet stream forms directly over the center of the strongest area of horizontal temperature difference, or the front. As a general rule, a strong front has a jet stream directly above it that is parallel to it. Figure B shows that jet streams are positioned just below the tropopause (the red lines) and above the fronts, in this case, the boundaries between two circulation cells carrying air of different temperatures.

1. What are the two effects of the continental plate/continental plate convergent boundary?
weeeeeb [17]

Answer:

Answer 1: The correct answer is b. convergent continental-continental boundary.

A convergent continental-continental boundary refers to a convergent plate boundary where two continental plates meet or come together. When this happens, a forceful collision occurs, and structures like mountains start to form. The Himalaya mountain range is formed as a result of the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian continental plates.

Answer 2: The correct answer is d. convergent oceanic-oceanic boundary.

Volcanic island arcs refers to a curved line of volcanoes formed from the subduction (sinking) of one oceanic plate below another plate. Examples of volcanic island arcs include Japanese Islands and Alaskan Islands

A 275 g sample of a metal requires 10.75 kJ to change its temperature from 21.2 oC to its melting temperature, 327.5 oC. What is
Vlada [557]

Answer:

c=0.127\ J/g^{\circ} C

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of the sample, m = 275 g

It required 10.75 kJ of heat to change its temperature from 21.2 °C to its melting temperature, 327.5 °C.

We need to find the specific heat of the metal. The heat required by a metal sample is given by :

Q=mc\Delta T

c is specific heat of the metal

c=\dfrac{Q}{m\Delta T}\\\\c=\dfrac{10.75\times 10^3\ J}{275\times (327.5 -21.2)}\\\\=0.127\ J/g^{\circ} C

So, the specific heat of metal is 0.127\ J/g^{\circ} C.

mrs_skeptik [129]

Based on exposure time and place, the Sun's radiation may have harmful or beneficial effects.

What is solar radiation?

Solar radiation refers to the radiation from the Sun in the form heat, light and other forms of radiation.

The radiation from the Sun may have harmful or beneficial effects.

The effects of the Sun's radiation can be classified as BE, HE or SP as follows:

 • BE- UV rays can help treat some health conditions. It creates Vitamin D
 • SP- Use sunblock lotion with SPF 15 during hot days.
 • BE- With the presence of sunlight, farmers can dry their crops.
 • HE- UV rays can damage the tissue in your eyes.
 • BE- Research says that sunlight helps moods.
 • HE- Too much exposure from the sun can cause skin cancer.
 • SP- Use sunglasses when you stay under the sun.
 • SP- Wear a wide- brimmed hat on sunny days.
 • BE- Humans can do recreational activities on a sunny day.
 • SP- Wear sunglasses that filter UV light.
 • HE- Prolonged exposure to the sun’s heat makes your skin age faster than normal.
 • HE- Too much heat from the sun can cause heat stroke and loss of water.
 • BE- Sunlight helps strengthen your immune system.
 • BE- The vitamin D made thanks to the sun plays a big role in bone health.
 • SP- Avoid sun in the middle of the day, from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
