What causes the jet stream to move farther south?

Chemistry

Jet streams are the major means of transport for weather systems. A jet stream is an area of strong winds ranging from 120-250 mph that can be thousands of miles long, a couple of hundred miles across and a few miles deep. Jet streams usually sit at the boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere at a level called the tropopause. This means most jet streams are about 6-9 miles off the ground. Figure A is a cross section of a jet stream.

The dynamics of jet streams are actually quite complicated, so this is a very simplified version of what creates jets. The basic idea that drives jet formation is this: a strong horizontal temperature contrast, like the one between the North Pole and the equator, causes a dramatic increase in horizontal wind speed with height. Therefore, a jet stream forms directly over the center of the strongest area of horizontal temperature difference, or the front. As a general rule, a strong front has a jet stream directly above it that is parallel to it. Figure B shows that jet streams are positioned just below the tropopause (the red lines) and above the fronts, in this case, the boundaries between two circulation cells carrying air of different temperatures.

Lera25 [3.4K]

Answer:

A) The mass would be the same.

Explanation:

Since there is no loss of any particle to vapor during the phase change process from solid to liquid, the mass of the before and after the process will remain the same.

 • In this way, the law of conservation of mass is obeyed.
 • Mass is the amount of matter contained in a substance.
 • Since there is no room for escape or matter loss, the mass will remain the same.

a mineral a.has a chemical formula b. occurs naturally c. has a characteristic internal structure d.all of the above
Anuta_ua [19.1K]
Answer: option d. all of the above.

Explanation:

A mineral is an element or a inorganic compound that existes in nature as solid cristals; usually combined with other minerals in ores.

Some examples of minerals, among many, are titania, wich is TiO2, zirconia, which is ZrO2, silica, which is SiO2, gold, Au, silver, Ag.

As you see the definition and examples given meet the whole features included in the stament: a. the have a chemical formula, b they occur naturally, and c.have a characteristic internal structure (that is the way how the atoms are arranged in the specifi cristal).

Calculate the concentrations of all species present in a 0.26 M solution of ethylammonium chloride (C2H5NH3Cl).
Alina [70]

Answer:

0.00000223

Explanation:

pKa for C2H5NH3+ = 10.7

pKw = 14.0

pKa + pKb = pKw

10.7 + pKb = 14.0

pKb = 14.0 - 10.7

pKb = 3.30

C2H5NH3Cl is a salt of ethylamine and HCl so it will dissolve in water to produce C2H5NH3^+ + Cl^-

The base hydrolysis reaction: C2H5NH3^+(aq) + H2O(l) <=> C2H5NH2(aq) + H3O^+(aq)

This reaction is described by Kb.

Kb = [C2H5NH2][H3O^+]/[C2H5NH3^+]

Let [C2H5NH2] = [H3O^+] = x,

so [C2H5NH3^+] = 0.26 - x

Kb = x^2/(0.26 - x) = 2.00 x 10^-11

Let's solve for x. In this equation, It is possible to solve without the use quadratic equation. So we can assume that 0.26 - x is approximately equal to 0.26. We won't know until we do the calculation.

We get: x^2 + 2.00 x 10^-11x - 4.99 x 10^-12 = 0

With the use of a quadratic calculator.

x = 2.23 x 10^-6 M = [C2H5NH2] = [H3O^+]

0.26 - x is just 0.26 M in this problem because 2.23 x 10^-6 M is insignificant.

[C2H5NH3^+] = 0.26 M = [Cl^-]

NOTE:

pH = -log [H3O^+] = -log(2.23 x 10^-6) = 5.65

Ka is the acid dissociation constant

Kb is the base dissociation constant
