The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 established the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. The Compromise  re-established the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, apart from, and no longer subject to the Austrian Empire. Furthermore, the agreement restored the old historic constitution of the Kingdom of Hungary.

The kingdom of Hungary had desired equal status with the Austrian Empire.

The Austrian emperor Francis Joseph granted Hungary full internal autonomy along with a responsible ministry.
