In general, paddocks are rectangular in shape. Area of rectangle is given by

area of rectangle = length $\times$ breadth

Length $\times$ breadth = 48  

x(x – 2) = 48

we can write 48 as product of 8 and 6

x(x – 2) = 8 x 6    

Now, by comparing on both sides, We can say that

x = 8 and x -2 = 6

Finally , the value of x is 8 and x - 2 is 6

Hence, the length and width of the paddock are 8, 6.
