Other than cognitive status,couple of factors can increase the risk of malnutrition and in older adults,these factors include;

__ Changes in taste,smell and appetite generally decrease with age,this makes it hard for older adults to enjoy eating and keep regular eating habits.

__ Age related diseases and inflammation can contribute to a decline in appetite and changes in how nutrients are processed by the body.

__ Difficulty chewing or swallowing,poor dental health and difficulty in handling eating utensils can contribute to malnutrition and dehydration.

There are several factors that influence the malnutrition and dehydration of older adults, among them, some of which are biological, psychological and social. The older adult may have physical problems in  salivation, chewing and swallowing problems. Similarly, older adults may have metabolic problems that aggravate the situation.
