Diagram A was a solar eclipse, and Diagram B was a lunar eclipse

Explanation:

In diagram A, the moon is blocking the sun and therefore casting a shadow over Earth. The moon is a new moon

In diagram B, the Earth is casting a shadow over the moon. The moon is a full moon.

These events do not happen each month because of the rarity of the positions that are needed to make one of these events happen.
