A company, which makes forging die wants to improve their steel parts and they contacted you because they heard you know a techn

ology using martensitic transformation to make the surface of their steel product hard. The company selected AISI 1008 steel for their product, but after heat treatment they have no idea how to verify whether the heat treatment did a sufficient job or not.
a. What test will tell whether the heat treatment was good enough?
b. If you have hardness test among the potential testing methods in the list what kind of hardness tests are available and what specific hardness test are you going to suggest to the company? And why?
c. After suggesting the methodology to the company, the company engineer came back with a very low hardness value. What went wrong?
d. What is the solution you want to provide to the company and why?

Answer:

a

Hardness Test

b

The available hardness test are

  • Rockwell hardness test
  • Vicker's hardness test
  • knoop test
  • scratch test
  • Brinell hardness test e.t.c

I would suggest Rockwell test because

  • It has good accuracy
  • In this test loads can be applied in 2 stages hence better results are obtained
  • it saves time because it testing are faster

c

   Well the following would be the reasons for low hardness value

  • It could be because the steel used has a low percentage of carbon
  • it could also result from the quenching medium used (e.g water , brine solution e.t.c)

d

In order to solve this problem here are the following ways

  • When selecting steel the ones with a carbon percentage 0.3% to 0.8% should be selected
  • When quenching the quenching medium should be brine solution

Explanation:

The reason why the answer to question is hardness test is because the heat treatment was carried out to obtain hardness so if it is great then the heat treatment is good

Two vertical parallel plates are spaced 0.01 ft apart. If the pressure decreases at a rate of 60 psf/ft in the vertical z-direct
Whitepunk [10]

Answer:

umax = 0.1259ft/s

Explanation:

Given:

•Distance between plates, B = 0.01ft

•Pressure difference decrease, \frac{dp}{dz}=60ps/ft

•Fluid viscosity, u = 10^-³lbf-s/ft²

Specific gravity, S = 0.80

Max velocity in the z-direction will be:

u_max= [\frac{B^2y}{8u}]\frac{dh}{ds}

But h = \frac{P}{y}+z

Substituting for h in the first equation, we have:

\frac{d}{dz}[\frac{p}{y}+z]

\frac{dh}{dz}=\frac{1}{y}\frac{dp}{ds}+\frac{dz}{dz}

= \frac{1}{0.8*62.4}(-60)+1

= -0.20192

Substituting dh/dz value in the first equation (umax), we have:

umax = \frac{0.01^2(0.8*62.4)}{8*10^-^3}(-0.20192)

umax = 0.1259ft/s

A large steel tower is to be supported by a series of steel wires; it is estimated that the load on each wire will be 19,000N. D
zhuklara [117]

Answer:

11.6 mm

Explanation:

With a factor of safety of 5 and a yield strength of 900 MPa the admissible stress is:

σadm = strength / fos

σadm = 900 / 5 = 180 MPa

The stress is the load divided by the section:

σ = P / A

σ = 4*P / (π*d^2)

Rearranging:

d^2 = 4*P / (π*σ)

d = \sqrt{4*P / (\pi*\sigma)}

d = \sqrt{4*19000 / (\pi*180*10^6)} = 0.0116 m = 11.6 mm
