Sexual objectification ocurrs when a person's sexual and physical attributes are separated from their personal qualities and these end up being dismissed. Objectification of women is a strong characteristic in a male dominant society, where women are seen not as people, but as objects of pleasure for men.

Thus, when a woman is portrayed in the media, little or nothing is said about her accomplishments or personality, all of which make her a human being, instead she is described by her gender and her appearance, as if she were an object.
