The cholesterol is a lipid which belongs to the chemical group of steroids. It is a precursor of sexual hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, often called steroid hormones. The bile- used in digestion- it is  made from cholesterol too. Cholesterol is also present in animal cellular membranes, in which its function is the regulation of fluidity of the plasmatic membrane.

It is not used to make saturated fat, because they are not stereroid lipids. Saturated fat is composed of glycerol and fatty acids.
