This year, DECA is encouraging chapters around the world to accomplish EPIC things. In high school, you only have four years to make an impact on your chapter, so what milestone do you want to reach? Chapters all over the organization are brainstorming every day on how to fundraise more money, attend more events, win more medals, and qualify for more chapter campaigns, but what do you want to do this year? The first step in setting goals is to come together as a chapter and to recognize where you can improve this year. Maybe your chapter has never attended a regional conference before and you’d like this year to be the first time you’re able to do that? Perhaps you had four members qualify for #DECAICDC last year and now you want to have eight this year? Or maybe you’d like to complete all five of DECA’s Chapter Campaigns! It could be anything, but you always have to make sure that it’s realistic and that you can formulate a plan that will allow you to accomplish this goal. Next, you want to make sure that for each goal you create, you also make a corresponding plan to accomplish it. So if you want more members to qualify to attend #DECAICDC, make sure you’re having more competitive event training sessions available to your members. If you want more money available for your chapter’s activities, then plan on doing more fundraisers that will produce more money than you had produced the year before. The next part is quite simple, and that is to document your goals and to continuously review your progress toward them. This could be on a sheet of paper you hang up in your classroom or a Google Spreadsheet your officer team shares, but when you make a goal you have to keep track of it in order to make constant progress towards completing it. Essentially, you have to “Keep your eyes on the prize.” Lastly, when you make your goals, you have to be ambitious! Don’t just try and double the people you want to take to #DECAICDC, triple it! Don’t just go for $100 in fundraising, go for $1000! Complete all five Chapter Campaigns this year and attend every single conference Push yourselves well beyond your limits, because if you work hard towards them every single day, then whether you were able to reach your goal(s) or not, you will still have made this year an EPIC experience with #DECAEPIC results!
