It provided additional funding to America's educational institutions ( schools, universities and research projects).

The Act was created as a direct result of the launching of the first ever satellite Sputnik by the Soviet Union. The was a general feeling of failure and falling behind in achievements compared to the the Soviet Union, the act was intended as a push to do further research and to win the space race between these two rival countries.
