Why do some combinations of ionic compounds form a precipitate while others do not

Chemistry

Answer:

This is because of the solubility of the reacting metal salts.

Explanation:

The use of solubility of salts influences the formation of precipitates. Most precipitation reactions occur as a result of the replacement reactions or double placement reactions. A double replacement reaction occurs when two ionic reactants dissociate and bond with respective anion and cation of the other reactant. This is simply a switch over reaction.

A double replacement reaction occurs when a chemical reaction occurs and one of the products formed is insoluble.

Here is an example:

PdSO_{(aq)} + K_{2}S_{(aq)} = PdS_{(s)} +K_{2}SO_{4}_{(aq)}

Both reactants are acqeous and the product is solid.

Whether or not such a reaction occurs can be determined by using the solubility rules for common ionic solids.

1. mol ratio of Al(NO₃)₃ : Na₂CO₃ = 2 : 3

2. Na₂CO₃ as a limiting reactant

Further explanation

Given

Reaction

2 Al(NO₃)₃ + 3 Na₂CO₃ → Al₂(CO₃)₃ + 6 NaNO₃

Required

mol ratio

Limiting reactant

Solution

The reaction coefficient in the chemical equation shows the mole ratio of the components of the compound involved in the reaction (reactants and products)

1. From the equation mol ratio of Al(NO₃)₃ : Na₂CO₃ = 2 : 3

2. mol : coefficient of Al(NO₃)₃ : Na₂CO₃ = 2 mole/2 : 2 mole/3 = 1 : 0.67

Na₂CO₃ as a limiting reactant (smaller)

Balance the equation and identify the type of reaction for ? p4(s) + ? ca(s) → ? ca3p2(s).
Kazeer [188]
There are different kinds of reactions. To name some, these are the synthesis reaction, decomposition reaction, single-replacement reaction, double-replacement reaction, combustion reaction, redox reaction, etc. For this type of reaction involving two reactants to yield only one product, this is a synthesis reaction.

P₄ (s) + 6 Ca (s) --> 2 Ca₃P₂ (s)
