After Andean and mid-latitude countries gained independence, many wanted a democratic style government and sought ways to ensure this in their countries. Andean and mid-latitude countries attempted making their countries in the democratic style.

But, this was not an easy achievement. Many countries found themselves facing economic hardships, military dictators, and social inequalities with the gap between the rich and the poor widening. Attempts at unity between the countries of the area were unsuccessful due to regional, geographical, and social differences leading to instability and population losses.
