Explanation: The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) proposed by Hans Selye proposes three different stages through which the body handles stress related events. The first stage is when the body is first exposed to a stress event especially that which the body has never been subjected to whereby the body system remains on alert waiting on what next to do. This is known as the ALARM stage characterized by rise in adrenaline level.

Next is the RESISTANCE stage which occurs once an individual overcomes the alarm stage, the body adjusts and stabilizes such that events which started as a shock turns into norm, which is the case of Melvin in the context above, Once the alarm stage has been conquered, the body adjusts. The EXHAUSTION stage is the final stage of Selye's Adaptation Syndrome which occurs when the resistance is broken leading to stress related diseases or other complications
