Now assume that the mass of object 1 is 2m, while the mass of object 2 remains m. If the collision is elastic, what are the fina

l velocities v1 and v2 of objects 1 and 2? Give the velocity v1 of object 1 followed by the velocity v2 of object 2, separated by a comma. Express the velocities in terms of v.

Answer:

(v₁, v₂) = [(v/3), (4v/3)]

Or

(v₁, v₂) = (v, 0)

Explanation:

In elastic collisions, the momentum and kinetic energy is usually conserved.

The momentum before collision = momentum after collision

And

Kinetic energy before collision = Kinetic energy after collision

Momentum of object 1 before collision = (2m)v = 2mv

Momentum of object 2 before collision = (m)(0) = 0

Momentum of object 1 after collision = (2m)(v₁) = 2mv₁

Momentum of object 2 after collision = (m)(v₂) = mv₂

So, we have

2mv = 2mv₁ + mv₂

2v = 2v₁ + v₂

v₂ = 2v - 2v₁ (eqn 1)

Kinetic energy of object 1 before collision = (1/2)(2m)(v²) = mv²

Kinetic energy of object 2 before collision = (1/2)(m)(0²) = 0

Kinetic energy of object 1 after collision = (1/2)(2m)(v₁²) = mv₁²

Kinetic energy of object 2 after collision = (1/2)(m)(v₁²) = (mv₂²/2)

So, we have,

mv² = mv₁² + (mv₂²/2)

v² = v₁² + (v₂²/2)

2v² = 2v₁² + v₂² (eqn 2)

Substitute (v₂ = 2v - 2v₁) from (eqn 1) into (eqn 2)

2v² = 2v₁² + (2v - 2v₁)²

2v² = 2v₁² + 4v² - 8vv₁ + 4v₁²

6v₁² - 8vv₁ + 2v² = 0

6v₁² - 6vv₁ - 2vv₁ + 2v² = 0

6v₁(v₁ - v) - 2v(v₁ - v) = 0

(6v₁ - 2v)(v₁ - v) = 0

6v₁ = 2v or v₁ = v

v₁ = (v/3) or v₁ = v

If v₁ = (v/3)

From (eqn 1)

v₂ = 2v - 2v₁

v₂ = 2v - 2(v/3)

v₂ = 2v - (2v/3)

v₂ = (4v/3)

If v₁ = v,

From eqn 1,

v₂ = 2v - 2v₁

v₂ = 2v - 2v = 0

(v₁, v₂) = [(v/3), (4v/3)]

Or

(v₁, v₂) = (v, 0)

Which types of questions can most likely be answered through a scientific investigation?
Sindrei [870]

Subjective questions can be answered most likely through well-designed scientific investigations. Investigating peoples opinions or favorites does not involve any scientific investigations.

What are scientific investigation?

Scientific investigations include study on different natural phenomenon through well designed research methodologies. They include a preliminary hypothesis based on observations and various scientific records helps for reference.

Through well designed scientific experiments we can solve subjective questions and can be helpful in solving different environmental or social issues.

Peoples opinion or objective types questions are not targeted at scientific investigation, hence, option b is correct.

An air conditioner running with R-134a on a cycle executed under the saturationdome between the pressure limits of 0.8 MPa and 0
ohaa [14]

Answer:

The COP of the system is = 4.6

Explanation:

Given data

Higher pressure = 1.8 M pa

Lower pressure = 0.12 M pa

Now we have to find out high & ow temperatures at these pressure limits.

Higher temperature corresponding to pressure 1.8 M pa

T_{H} = 62.9 °c = 335.9 K

Lower temperature corresponding to pressure 0.2 M pa

T_{L} = - 10.1 °c = 262.9 K

COP of the system is given by

COP = \frac{T_{L} }{T_{H} -T_{L} }

COP = \frac{335.9}{335.9 -262.9}

COP = 4.6

Therefore the COP of the system is = 4.6

A student does 1,000 J of work when she moves to her dormitory. Her internal energy is decreased by 3,000 J. Determine the heat
Alenkinab [10]

Answer:

-2000 J (heat lost)

Explanation:

We can solve the problem by using the 1st law of thermodynamics:

\Delta U = Q-W

where

\Delta U is the change in internal energy of a system

Q is the heat absorbed by the system

W is the work done by the system

In this situation, we have

W=1000 W (work done by the student)

\Delta U = -3000 J (decrease in internal energy)

So the heat is

Q=\Delta U + W = -3000 J +1000 J = -2000 J

And the negative sign means the student has lost heat.
