They want you pick choice-B, but it's a terribly corrupted example.

Newton came 100 years AFTER Kepler.

Furthermore, he didn't USE Kepler's laws to work out his law of gravity, but once he HAD his law of gravity, he was able to use IT to show why Kepler's laws must be true.

Answer:

The correct example is Kepler based his laws of planetary motions off of Newton’s law of gravity.

Explanation:

Cumulative is defined as something, which forms on itself. For example, the formulation of a law that is done by utilizing the outcome of the other. Kepler's law was formulated after the discovery of Newton's law of gravity. The law of gravity is more fundamental in comparison to Kepler's law.

The Kepler formulated his laws with the help of Newton's law of gravity. Therefore, Kepler's laws of planetary motion off Newton's law of gravity is the best illustration that how scientific knowledge is cumulative.

Sliva [168]
I think the correct answer would be the third option. An example of a pure research would be creating synthetic elements to study their properties. Pure research is also known as fundamental or basic research. It has an exploratory nature wherein it is done without any end use in mind. It is mostly out of the curiosity or intuition of a researcher. Most of the study under this type is aiming to advance an existing knowledge by explaining or identifying the relationship of the variables being studied. It is aimed at improving theories in order to the understanding of a specific  phenomenon.
