The Geiger counter contains a metal tube containing a wire (electrode) and gas. When nuclear radiation (X-ray or Gamma) enters the tube it ionizes the gas (strips electrons from gas atoms) allowing the gas to conduct electricity when the metal tube and electrode are maintained at a voltage differential. A circuit counts the frequency of ionizations. Alpha particles (helium nuclei) can be stopped by a sheet of paper and Beta particles (electrons) are often not energetic enough to penetrate metal. A student is asked to standardize a solution of barium hydroxide. He weighs out 0.978 g potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHC8H4O4,
Sav [38]

Answer:

(A) 0.129 M

(B) 0.237 M

Explanation:

(A) The reaction between potassium hydrogen phthalate and barium hydroxide is:

 • 2HA + Ba(OH)₂ → BaA₂ + 2H₂O

Where A⁻ is the respective anion of the monoprotic acid (KC₈H₄O₄⁻).

We convert mass of phthalate to moles, using its molar mass:

 • 0.978 g ÷ 156 g/mol = 9.27x10⁻³ mol = 9.27 mmol

Now we convert mmol of HA to mmol of Ba(OH)₂:

 • 9.27 mmol HA * \frac{1mmolBa(OH)_{2}}{2mmolHA} = 6.64 mmol Ba(OH)₂

Finally we calculate the molarity of the Ba(OH)₂ solution:

 • 6.64 mmol / 35.8 mL = 0.129 M

(B) The reaction between Ba(OH)₂ and HCl is:

 • 2HCl + Ba(OH)₂ → BaCl₂ + 2H₂O

So the moles of HCl that reacted are:

 • 17.1 mL * 0.129 M * \frac{2mmolHCl}{1mmolBa(OH)_2} = 4.41 mmol HCl

And the molarity of the HCl solution is:

 • 4.41 mmol / 18.6 mL = 0.237 M

Justify the statement, "nuclear energy is harmful as well as useful."
Olenka [21]

Nuclear energy is harmful because it releases of harmful ionizing radiation and has been employed in the production of atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs.

Nuclear energy is beneficial in that it produces vast amount of energy for domestic and industrial purposes.

What is nuclear energy?

Nuclear energy refers to the energy which is produced as a result of the changes that occur in the nucleus of atoms of elements.

Nuclear energy produces the largest amount of energy when compared to other forms of energy sources.

Nuclear energy is produced by two types of nuclear reactions:

 • Nuclear fission and Nuclear fusion

Nuclear energy is harmful in that it results in the release of harmful ionizing radiation which damages cells and tissues of living organisms.

Nuclear energy is also harmful because nuclear energy has been employed in the production of atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs.

On the other hand, nuclear energy is beneficial in that it produces vast amount of energy which can be used for domestic and industrial purposes. It also produces fewer wastes that damage the environment compared to fossil fuels.

In conclusion, nuclear energy is both beneficial and harmful.

Based on the Hund's Rule, the three electrons in a 2p orbital are arranged as shown in option C.

What is an orbital?

The term orbital refers to a region in space where there is a high probability of finding the electron. We know that an electron in an atom could be defined by the use of four sets of quantum numbers which are;

 • The principal quantum number
 • The orbital quantum number
 • The spin quantum number
 • The magnetic quantum number

Hund's rule states that, electrons occur singly before pairing takes place. In this case, we can see that the only arrangement that obeys the Hund's Rule is option C.
