It would be because they failed to cope up with the change and development especially in technology and agriculture with other nations that they fell and become prey of imperialist nations. One example of this is the Qing dynasty that is divided by Imperialist Nations. Qing dynasty was divided and slowly eaten up by European nations like during the first opium war where they lost against the British and was forced to give up Hong Kong to the British.
