For the feasibility region shown below, find the maximum value of the function P=3x+2y.
abruzzese [7]
Given:
P = 3x + 2y

There is an accompanying graph in this problem. In the graph, there are 4 points to consider. I'll just assign letters on each point.

Point O is found in x = 0 ; y = 0 or (0,0)
Point A is found in x = 8 ; y = 0 or (8,0)
Point B is found in x = 6 ; y = 5 or (6,5)
Point C is found in x = 0 ; y = 8 or (0,8)

We will substitute x and y in the equation by its values per point.
Point A = 3(8) + 2(0) = 24 + 0 = 24
Point B = 3(6) + 2(5) = 18 + 10 = 28
Point C = 3(0) + 2(8) = 0 + 16 = 16

The maximum value of the function P = 3x+2y is 28 and its minimum value is 16.

you can spend at most $20 on tomatoes and red peppers for a soup. tomatoes cost $2.50 per pound and red peppers cost $4 per poun
Ber [7]

<u>Answer-</u>

\boxed{\boxed{2.50x+4y\leq 20}}

<u>Solution-</u>

The total money that you have or maximum amount that you can spend = $20

Let's assume,

x = Number of tomatoes bought

y = Number of red peppers bought

Price of tomatoes per pound = $2.50

Price of red peppers per pound = $4

Hence,

Total cost of tomatoes = $2.5x

Total cost of red peppers = $4y

As you can spend at most (any amount less than or equal to) $20, so

2.5x+4y\leq 20

Taking a point as origin (0, 0) and then putting it in the equation,

\Rightarrow 2.5(0)+4(0)\leq 20\\\\\Rightarrow 0\leq 20

As this satisfies, so the shaded region will be towards that point i.e origin

From the graph, the two solutions that are on the boundary line are (8, 0), (5, 0)
