Answer: Magnesium is getting oxidized and is the reducing agent. Chlorine is getting reduced and is the oxidizing agent.

Explanation:

Oxidation reaction is defined as the chemical reaction in which an atom looses its electrons. Here, the oxidation state of atom increases.X\rightarrow X^{n+}+ne^-

Reduction reaction is defined as the chemical reaction in which an atom gains electrons. Here, the oxidation state of atom decreases. X^{n+}+ne^-\rightarrow X

Oxidizing agents are defined as the agents which help the other substance to get oxidized and itself gets reduced. These undergo reduction reactions.

Reducing agents are defined as the agents which help the other substance to get reduced and itself gets oxidized. These undergo oxidation reactions.

For the given chemical equation:

Mg(s)+Cl_2(g)\rightarrow Mg^{2+}(aq.)+2Cl^-(aq.)

Oxidation half reaction: Mg\rightarrow Mg^{2+}+2e^-

As, magnesium is loosing 2 electrons and its oxidation state is getting increased. Thus, it is undergoing oxidation reaction and is considered as reducing agent.

Reduction half reaction: Cl_2+2e^-\rightarrow 2Cl^-

As, chlorine is gaining 2 electrons and its oxidation state is getting reduced. Thus, it is undergoing reduction reaction and is considered as oxidizing agent.

An oxidation-reduction reaction is a reaction in which oxidation numbers change. Oxidation involves the loss of electrons while reduction is the gain of electrons . In the reaction above; Chlorine undergoes reduction, and is therefore, the oxidizing agent, while Mg undergoes oxidation and is therefore the reducing agent.

4.80 x 10^25 formula units pf calcium iodide (Cal2) will have what mass?
maw [93]

Answer:

mass CaI2 = 23.424 Kg

Explanation:

From the periodic table we obtain for CaI2:

⇒ molecular mass CaI2: 40.078 + ((2)(126.90)) = 293.878 g/mol

∴ mol CaI2 = (4.80 E25 units )×(mol/6.022 E23 units) = 79.708 mol CaI2

⇒ mass CaI2 = (79.708 mol CaI2)×(293.878 g/mol) = 23424.43 g

⇒ mass CaI2 = 23.424 Kg

If the distance between a point charge and a neutral atom and is multiplied by a factor of 5, by what factor does the force on t
dexar [7]

Given :

The distance between a point charge and a neutral atom and is multiplied by a factor of 5.

To Find :

By what factor does the force on the neutral atom by the point charge change.

Solution :

We know, electrostatic force between two object is directly proportional to product of charge and inversely proportional to distance between them.

Now, charge in neutral atom is 0 C.

So, the electrostatic force between two of them is also 0 N.

Therefore, by changing distance between the charge the forces did no change ( it remains zero).
