Variations in average atomic mass may be observed for elements obtained from different sources. Lithium provides an example of t

his. The isotopic composition of lithium from naturally occurring minerals is 7.5% 6Li and 92.5% 7Li, which have masses of 6.01512 amu and 7.01600 amu, respectively. A commercial source of lithium, recycled from a military source, was 3.75% 6Li (and the rest 7Li). Calculate the average atomic mass values for each of these two sources.

Answer:

Average atomic mass of lithium from source-I= 7.291734 amu

Average atomic mass of lithium from source-II= 6.78467 amu

Explanation:

Average atomic mass of an element is defined as the sum of masses of each isotope each multiplied by their natural fractional abundance.

Formula used to calculate average atomic mass follows:

\text{Average atomic mass }=\sum_{i=1}^n\text{(Atomic mass of an isotopes)}_i\times \text{(Fractional abundance})_i

1) Average atomic mass of lithium from source-I

Atomic mass of Li-6=6.01512 amu

Fractional abundance of Li-6= 7.5% =0.075

Atomic mass of Li-7=7.01600 amu

Fractional abundance of Li-7= 92.5% =0.975

Average atomic mass : 6.01512 amu\times 0.075+7.01600 amu\times 0.975

Average atomic mass of lithium from source-I= 7.291734 amu

2) Average atomic mass of lithium from source-II

Atomic mass of Li-6=6.01512 amu

Fractional abundance of Li-6= 3.75% =0.0375

Atomic mass of Li-7=7.01600 amu

Fractional abundance of Li-7= 100%- 3.75% =96.25%=0.9625

Average atomic mass : 6.01512 amu\times 0.0375+7.01600 amu\times 0.9625

Average atomic mass of lithium from source-II= 6.78467 amu

What mass of aluminum is produced by the decomposition of 5.0 kg al2o3?
Nina [5.8K]
The  mass for  of aluminum that is produced  by  the decomposition  of  5.0 Kg Al2O3 is 2647 g or 2.647  Kg

          calculation
Write  the equation for decomposition  of Al2O3

Al2O3 = 2Al  + 3 O2

find the  moles  of  Al2O3 =  mass/molar mass

convert  5 Kg  to g   = 5 x1000 = 5000 grams
molar mass of  Al2O3 =  27 x2 + 16 x3  = 102 g/mol

 moles =5000 g/  102 g/mol = 49.0196 moles

by use  of mole ratio between Al2O3 to  Al  which is 1:2  the moles of Al = 49.0196 x2 =98.0392  moles

mass of  Al = moles x molar  mass

= 98.0392 moles x  27g/mol = 2647  grams  or 2647/1000 = 2.647 Kg

Naturally occurring hydrogen consists of three isotopes, hydrogen-1 (1.01 u),
Vlada [557]

Answer:

Hydrogen-1

Explanation:

Not sure what kind of explanation is needed for your question, because it doesnt specify.

The easiest should be:

Average mass of an element is calculated as the sum of the multiplication of each isotope by its percentage

And the mass of the hydrogen is 1, therefore the more abundant is hydrogen-1
