A 2.144-g sample of phosgene, a compound used as a chemical warfare agent during World War I, contains 0.260 g of carbon, 0.347

g of oxygen, and 1.537 g of chlorine. What is the empirical formula of this substance?

First convert each mass to moles by dividing by the molar mass.

0.347g Oxygen = 0.022 moles
0.260g Carbon = 0.022 moles
1.537g Chlorine = 0.043 moles

Divide each by smallest mole vale (0.022)

Oxygen = 0.022/0.022 = 1
Carbon = 0.022/0.022 = 1
Chlorine = 0.043/0.022 = 2

Therefore the empirical formula is COCl2

The volume of a gas at 17.5 psi decreases from 1.8L to 750mL. What is the new pressure of the gas in arm?
Maurinko [17]

Answer:

P₂ = 2.88 atm

Explanation:

Given data:

Initial volume of gas = 1.8 L

Final volume = 750 mL

Initial pressure = 17.5 Psi

Final pressure = ?

Solution:

We will convert the units first:

Initial pressure = 17.5  /14.696 = 1.2 atm

Final volume = 750 mL ×1L/1000L = 0.75 L

The given problem will be solved through the Boly's law,

"The volume of given amount of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure by keeping the temperature and number of moles constant"

Mathematical expression:

P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

P₁ = Initial pressure

V₁ = initial volume

P₂ = final pressure

V₂ = final volume

Now we will put the values in formula,

P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

1.2 atm × 1.8 L =  P₂  ×0.75 L

P₂ = 2.16 atm. L/ 0.75 L

P₂ = 2.88 atm

Write a balanced chemical equation to show the reaction of naoh with the monoprotic acid hcl.
Yakvenalex [24]
NaOH or sodium hydroxide is a base which reacts with HCl or Hydrochloric acid to from a salt and water. The equation that represents this reaction is as follows: NaOH (I) + HCl (l) ==H2O (l) +NaCl (aq). The reaction between an acid and a base always produces a salt and water. In this case the salt is sodium chloride.

Question 2
andrezito [222]

Answer:

A.  Peroxide breaking down into water and oxygen

Explanation:

Generally when it comes to changes, there are physical and chemical changes. In physical changes, there are no new substances been formed, however in chemical change new substances are formed.

A.  Peroxide breaking down into water and oxygen

This is a chemical change.

B . Bubbles forming when a pot of water is heated

This is a physical change

C. A pair of jeans soaked in water drying after hanging outside

This is a physical change

D . A block of ice decreasing in size due to a change in temperature

This is a physical change.

Only option A is different from the rest,hence this is the answer.

how many grams of oxygen are produced if 25.0g of potassium chlorate decomposes according to the reaction 2KCLO3 —-> 2KCL +3O
AveGali [126]

Answer:

approximately 15.1 grams.

Explanation:

The key to chemistry is to change everything to moles. Then when you have the answer in moles change the answer back to grams, liters, or whatever you want.

change 25 grams of potassium chlorate to moles.

calculate the gram molecular mass of potassium chlorate.

Chlorate is Cl with 3 oxygens. ate = saturated. Chlorine has seven valance electrons when it is saturated six of these electrons are used by oxygen ( 2 electrons per oxygen) leaving only 1 electron.

1 K x 39 grams/mole

+1 Cl x 35.4 grams/ mole

+3 O x 16 grams/ mole

= 122.4 grams / mole Potassium Chlorate

25

122.4

= moles.

2.05 moles of Potassium Chlorate.

There is a 1:1 mole ratio. 1 mole of Potassium Chlorate will produce 1 mole of Potassium Chloride.

2.05 moles of Potassium Chlorate will produce 2.05 moles of Potassium Chloride.

Find the gram molecular mass of Potassium Chloride.

1 K x 39 = 39

+1 Cl x 35.4 = 35.4

= 74.4 grams / mole.

2.05 moles x 74.4 grams/ mole = 15.2 grams

Hope it helps :)
