Consider a bungee cord of unstretched length L0 = 45 m. When the cord is stretched to L > L0 it behaves like a spring and obe

ys Hooke’s law with the spring constant k = 33 N/m. However, unlike a spring, the cord folds instead of becoming compressed when the distance between its ends is less than the unstretched length: For L < L0 the cord has zero tension and zero elastic energy. To test the cord’s reliability, one end is tied to a high bridge (height H = 214 m above the surface of a river) and the other end is tied to a steel ball of weight mg = 150 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 . The ball is dropped off the bridge with zero initial speed. Fortunately, the cord works and the ball stops in the air before it hits the water — and then the cord pulls it back up. Calculate the ball’s height hbot at the lowest point of its trajectory. For simplicity, neglects the cord’s own weight and inertia as well as the air drag on the ball and the cord. Answer in units of m.

Answer:

   y1 = -130 m

            y2 = 130.99 m

Explanation:

For this exercise we can use energy conservation

Starting point Higher

     Em_{o} = U = mg h

     .h = 215 m

Final point. In the lowest part of the trajectory

      Em_{f} = Ke + U

      Em_{f} = ½ k (y-45) 2 + m g y

Energy is conserved so

           Em_{o} = Em_{f}

           m g h = ½ k (y- 45)² + m g y

           150 9.8 214 = ½ 33 (y-45)² +150 9.8 y

           314580 = 16.5 (y² - 2 45 y + 45²) + 1470 y

           314580-16.5 2025 = 16.5 y² - 1485 y + 1470y

            281169.5 = 16.5 y² - 15 y

            y² - 0.9090 y - 17040.57 = 0

We solve the second degree equation

            y = [0.9090 ±√ (0.9090² + 4 17040.57)] / 2

            y = [0.9090 ± 261.08] / 2

            y1 = -130 m

            y2 = 130.99 m

Therefore the body drops to 130.99 m

1A.)A railroad car of mass 21700 kg moving with a speed of 3.36 m/s collides
Pepsi [2]

Answer:

(a) 2.03 m/s

(b) 2.15 m/s

Explanation:

(a)

From the law of conservation of momentum, the sum of initial momentum equals the sum of final momentum

Momentum, p=mv where m is the mass and v is the velocity

m_1v_1+m_2v_2=(m_1+m_2)v_c where v_c is the common velocity, v_1 and v_2 are velocities of the first railroad car  and the second railroad car respectively, m_1 and m_2 are masses of the first railroad car  and the second railroad car respectively

Substituting the given figures then

21700\times 3.36+41700\times 1.34=(21700+41700)v_c\\63400v_c=128790\\v_c=\frac {128790}{63400}=2.031388013\approx 2.03 m/s

(b)

Momentum, p=mv where m is the mass and v is the velocity

m_1v_1+m_2v_2=m_1v_3+m_2v_4 where v_1 and v_2 are initial velocities of the ball moving towards west and the other ball moving in opposite direction respectively, m_1 and m_2 are masses of the first railroad car  and the second railroad car respectively

Taking west as positive then the opposite direction will be negative hence

0.455\times 7.36+(1.01\times -12.4)= 0.455\times -15.4 + (1.01\times v_4}

Note that when the 0.455 rebounds, it moves towards East and since we took West as positive that is why we give 15.4 as a negative value.

-2.1682=1.01v_4\\v_4=\frac {-2.1682}{1.01}=-2.146732673\approx 2.15 m/s towards East

PART ONE
Korvikt [17]

Answer:

1) 460.5 N

2) 431.7 N

Explanation:

Draw a free body diagram.  There are four forces on the hammer:

Applied force 62.5 N in the +x direction, 30 cm from the ground

Reaction force Rᵧ in the +y direction, at the point of contact

Reaction force Rₓ in the +x direction, at the point of contact

Reaction force F at 31° from the vertical, 4.75 cm to the left of the point of contact

Part One

To find F, sum the moments about the point of contact:

∑τ = Iα

(62.5 N) (30 cm) − (F cos 31°) (4.75 cm) = 0

F = 460.5 N

Part Two

To find Rₓ and Rᵧ, sum the forces in the x and y directions.

∑Fₓ = ma

62.5 N − F sin 31° + Rₓ = 0

Rₓ = 174.7 N

∑Fᵧ = ma

-F cos 31° + Rᵧ = 0

Rᵧ = 394.7 N

The net reaction force at the point of contact is:

R = √(Rₓ² + Rᵧ²)

R = 431.7 N

You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between
Klio2033 [76]

Answer:

a) u=0.05602\ m.s^{-1}

b) u'=0.0169\ m.s^{-1}

Explanation:

Given:

mass of the ball, m=0.4\ kg

horizontal velocity of the ball, u=10\ m.s^{-1}

mass of the person, M=71\ kg

a)

<u>Using the law of  conservation of momentum:</u>

m.v=(M+m).u

0.4\times 10=(71+0.4)\times u

u=0.05602\ m.s^{-1}

b)

Given:

  • rebound velocity of the ball, v'=7\ m.s^{-1}

Using conservation of momentum,

m.v+M.u=m.v'+M.u'

0.4\times10+71\times 0=0.4\times 7+71\times u'

u'=0.0169\ m.s^{-1}
